Abstract: This talk will give an overview of the In the Gulag's Shadow project, a cross-national study of local perceptions of prisons and prisoners in Gulag and non-Gulag sites across Kazakhstan and Russia. Case studies in the project include prison museums, often carefully managed on the national level, and other sites, including working prisons, where punishment today remains an economic.
